Reddit stock mentions versus unique authors
Understand why raw Reddit stock mention counts, unique authors, author concentration, threads, and subreddit spread answer different questions.
The short answer
Raw mentions measure how often a ticker appears. Unique authors measure how many distinct accounts participated. Neither is sufficient alone: a useful interpretation also considers how much one author dominates, whether mentions span independent threads, and whether the conversation extends across more than one community.
What a raw mention count measures
A mention count is an occurrence total. If one account writes the same ticker ten times, those appearances can contribute ten mentions unless the collection or scoring system applies additional controls. Counts are useful for measuring total activity, but they do not describe how many people generated that activity.
This distinction becomes important in daily recommendation threads, meme-heavy discussions, and small-cap communities where a small group can produce a large share of the visible conversation.
What unique authors add
Unique-author count describes participation breadth. Ten qualifying mentions from ten accounts show wider participation than ten mentions from one account. It can help reduce the influence of repeated posting, but it cannot prove that the accounts are independent or trustworthy.
Account age and karma can provide additional context, yet both have limitations. New accounts can be genuine, old accounts can be compromised or purchased, and high karma does not establish investment expertise.
Unique authors improve the measurement of breadth. They do not certify credibility.
Why top-author share matters
Top-author share asks what percentage of qualifying activity came from the single most active author. A ticker with twenty authors can still be highly concentrated if one person produced most of the mentions. Concentration therefore complements the unique-author total.
A high top-author share is not automatically manipulation. It may be a detailed due-diligence author responding to questions. That is why the original posts, comment history, language, and thread structure remain necessary evidence.
Threads and communities provide another layer
Independent thread count helps distinguish one viral discussion from repeated discovery across separate conversations. Subreddit spread shows whether attention remains confined to one community or appears across investing audiences with different interests.
Cross-community spread should not be treated as confirmation that a claim is correct. The same rumor can travel quickly. Its value is descriptive: it shows how far the conversation has propagated.
